Give us the resources to fight Tory attacks

Ken Douglas, Socialist Party national treasurer

Can you make a donation to support the Socialist Party and our struggle for a socialist alternative? We have no rich funders - our backers are ordinary working class people who want change; who want to see a society where the wealth doesn't just flow to the super-rich but is used to give everyone a decent life.

That was the message that our members took into the general election. Ordinary workers, trade unionists, students, community campaigners, stood as part of Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition (TUSC) to say that austerity is a lie that just benefits the rich.

Rich elite

Even now those lying hypocrites, known as MPs, are busy debating giving themselves a 7,000 pay rise, while telling us we have to tighten our belts.

Like those candidates for the Labour leadership contest who think that the Labour election campaign didn't kow-tow enough to big business, they have no idea of the anger that is building against the profiteers and crooks that run the big companies and the banks and their representatives in parliament.

The Socialist argues a strategy to harness that anger. The working class is the most powerful force in society but we need trade union leaders who aren't afraid to build a political movement and a mass workers' party that can put an end to austerity.

The Tories don't just want to take us back to the 1930s, they want to take us back to the nineteenth century. But just as the conditions created by capitalism then led to the flourishing of socialist ideas and posed the question of building a new society, so it is inevitable that these ideas will again gain mass currency.

That's why we are asking for your support to help build a socialist alternative.

Can you donate 5, 10, 50 or 100 or more? We can guarantee that every penny will be used in the fight for socialism.

Coronavirus crisis - Finance appeal

The coronavirus crisis has laid bare the class character of society in numerous ways. It is making clear to many that it is the working class that keeps society running, not the CEOs of major corporations.

The results of austerity have been graphically demonstrated as public services strain to cope with the crisis.

The government has now ripped up its 'austerity' mantra and turned to policies that not long ago were denounced as socialist. But after the corona crisis, it will try to make the working class pay for it, by trying to claw back what has been given.

  • The Socialist Party's material is more vital than ever, so we can continue to report from workers who are fighting for better health and safety measures, against layoffs, for adequate staffing levels, etc.
  • Our 'fighting coronavirus workers' charter', outlines a programme to combat the virus and protect workers' living conditions.
  • When the health crisis subsides, we must be ready for the stormy events ahead and the need to arm workers' movements with a socialist programme - one which puts the health and needs of humanity before the profits of a few.
Inevitably, during the crisis we have not been able to sell the Socialist and raise funds in the ways we normally would.
We therefore urgently appeal to all our viewers to donate to our special coronavirus appeal.
