Youth Fight for Jobs campaign

Good response in Bridgend

Three, let's be generous and say, more 'mature' Socialist Party members, launched the 'Youth Fight For Jobs' campaign on our stall in Bridgend on 31 January.

The response was tremendous, with 37 papers sold, 32 fighting fund raised and one potential member. Parents as well as young people took away our jobs leaflets and everyone was nodding their approval of our slogans - Fight for jobs, support the workers not the bankers!

The media propaganda about keeping out foreign workers and having British jobs for British workers was raised at the stall but we responded by saying there were no jobs available for any workers because of the bosses' crisis.

We were selling opposite a closed Woolies and pointed out that foreign workers were not to blame for the 30,000 jobs lost there recently. Similarly foreign workers are not responsible for the redundancies and lay-offs in Corus or Fords in Bridgend. It's the system that's wrong and that's why we are fighting for socialist nationalisation and a socialist answer to the capitalist crisis.

Our arguments received a positive response, especially when we raised about the need to fight for young people to have a future with decent jobs and a proper wage.

This campaign is going to get a big echo in the coming months as the Socialist Party takes the fight for jobs into every town and city in the country.

Building trade union support in Newcastle

Newcastle Socialist Party branch has acquired support from trade unionists for the Youth Fight for Jobs campaign. This includes newly elected North West and Manchester RMT national executive member Craig Johnston who is also now openly supporting the Campaign for a New Workers Party.

Other Youth Fight for Jobs supporters include civil service union PCS national executive member Kevin McHugh, North East RMT national executive member Bob Potts and North East RMT regional organiser Stan Herschel.

Coronavirus crisis - Finance appeal

The coronavirus crisis has laid bare the class character of society in numerous ways. It is making clear to many that it is the working class that keeps society running, not the CEOs of major corporations.

The results of austerity have been graphically demonstrated as public services strain to cope with the crisis.

The government has now ripped up its 'austerity' mantra and turned to policies that not long ago were denounced as socialist. But after the corona crisis, it will try to make the working class pay for it, by trying to claw back what has been given.

  • The Socialist Party's material is more vital than ever, so we can continue to report from workers who are fighting for better health and safety measures, against layoffs, for adequate staffing levels, etc.
  • Our 'fighting coronavirus workers' charter', outlines a programme to combat the virus and protect workers' living conditions.
  • When the health crisis subsides, we must be ready for the stormy events ahead and the need to arm workers' movements with a socialist programme - one which puts the health and needs of humanity before the profits of a few.
Inevitably, during the crisis we have not been able to sell the Socialist and raise funds in the ways we normally would.
We therefore urgently appeal to all our viewers to donate to our special coronavirus appeal.
